AI, Nuclear Risks, and the NPT
The accelerating pace of artificial intelligence development is introducing new and insufficiently understood risks into nuclear command, control, and communications (NC3) systems—while safety, research and governance frameworks lag behind. These developments increase the risk that sensitive systems—including those linked to nuclear infrastructure—could be probed, degraded, or compromised. Taken together, these trends point to a structural imbalance: capability in deployment is accelerating faster than safety assurance.
