IALANA Statement on the U.S./Israeli Bombing of Iran Violates International Law

The United States/Israeli bombing of Iran clearly violates fundamental rules of international law. It violates the sovereignty of Iran, contrary to Article 2(4) of the UN Charter which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. There is no plausible case that the U.S. and Israel are acting in self-defense against an imminent attack. Nor is regime change an acceptable justification for use of force, as it runs directly counter to the injunction to respect the political independence of states.

Renewed pressure to expand the U.S. nuclear arsenal is again being advanced by some advocacy organizations and members of the Congress.Reports also indicate that some voices within the current Administration oppose extending the limits of the New START Treaty, which is scheduled to expire on February 4, 2026. Abandoning these limits will remove the last remaining constraints on U.S. and Russian strategic nuclear forces. Doing so while renewing efforts to expand nuclear arsenals only further increases global instability and the risk of miscalculation and nuclear war.
